Herbal Oils & Wellness
Herbal Oils is my essential oils education and sales business.
I teach classes and workshops on essential oils, herbs, and plant-related wellness. I have a background in plant science and medical science, and have had a lifelong interest in herbs. I have an international certificate in Aromatherapy from the Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy in San Francisco, and have been using essential oils extensively for about ten years.
I use herbs that grow locally, for the most part, but use essential oils from around the world. I’ve used oils from a number of companies that market authentic, good-quality oils. A few years ago, I discovered a company that supplies high-quality, therapeutic-grade essential oils and wellness products, and provides extensive education on their product for users. They distribute their products through direct selling/network marketing, which increases the likelihood that the customer will have at least one personal connection who can help them get started and support them as they use how to use essential oils. This site is one way that I support my customers and my team.
My essential oils story.
Since childhood, I’ve been interested in plants. My siblings and I made “salads” from clover flowers and “sour clover”, picked green beans and tomatoes from the garden and wild berries in the forest, learned that “mints” had square stems and smelled good, and learned to avoid poison ivy. I was introduced to wildflowers at park programs on our many family camping trips. In college, I majored in Botany at the University of Minnesota because I liked science but was increasingly distressed at animal experiments; while most of the coursework involved chemistry and cell biology, I especially enjoyed ethnobotany and the field trips in my taxonomy courses. As a student, I worked in the University Herbarium, processing and filing plant specimens from around the world and gaining an appreciation for the wide variety of life in the plant kingdom, which at that time included fungi, lichens, and algae.
My background is in biology, chemistry, and the health sciences; I have a B.S. and an M.S. in Botany from the University of Minnesota, and have worked as a botanist and plant ecologist for the Minnesota DNR. I worked for about ten years as a clinical laboratory scientist MT (ASCP) in a hospital lab setting, primarily in the areas of hematology, microbiology, and virology. I taught at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota for fifteen years, as a lab instructor in the areas of plant biology, microbiology, and anatomy and physiology, but also in science education and women’s biology. As the site ecologist for SNAP, the School Nature Area Project, I worked with schools across Minnesota to help develop school natural areas and related curriculum. For the past fifteen years I have been teaching science at the high school level, primarily biology and chemistry. I am currently semi-retired and pursuing my original passion, useful plants.
